AN ARTIST'S FREEDOM IN IRAQ
Until recently, Kalat, an Iraqi artist, spent his talent making statues of Saddam Hussein. Two Kalat statues of the deposed Iraqi leader on horseback were dynamited by American soldiers when they took control of Saddam's palace at Tikrit.
Kalat melted the statues down and created a memorial to fallen U.S. soldiers. Members of the 4th Infantry Division paid $18,000 for the work, which will be taken to Ft. Hood, TX.
Kalat, a local Iraqi artist, pauses to look at a memorial he has been working on to honor the fallen soldiers of 4th Infantry Division. The new statue stands in a former palace of Saddam Hussein that currently serves as the 4th ID headquarters at Forward Operating Base Ironhorse.
